Alliance for Historical Dialogue and Accountability at Columbia University Fellowship Open for Applications

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR)  was founded in 1978  at the Columbia University in Manhattan, New York. The institute is committed to its three core goals of providing excellent human rights education to Columbia students, fostering innovative interdisciplinary academic research, and offering its expertise in capacity building to human rights leaders, organizations, and universities around the world.  Right now, the Alliance for Historical Dialogue & Accountability (AHDA)-fellowship is open for applications.

This program is designed for lawyers, journalists, teachers, social workers, community organizers, artists, scholars and other human rights activists working on issues related to dealing with the past such as: transitional justice, historical dialogue, memory studies, historical justice, oral history, history education. Participants are selected on the basis of their previous work experience in work that deals with the past, their commitment to the human rights field, and demonstrated ability to pursue graduate-level studies. Full-time students will not be considered. Applicants who are mid-career and hold full or part-time jobs pursuing their advocacy efforts are preferred.

The programme is aimed at honing practical skills in fundraising, advocacy and leadership; to developing a deeper understanding of and engagement with the past; and to fostering mutually beneficial relationships with their peers and with international and non-profit organizations based in New York and Washington, D.C. Over the course of the semester, fellows take part in seminars, work-shops, site visits, collaborative relationships and networking, providing ample opportunity for networking and advocacy.

Book launch & Symposium: The Change Handbook Project

Human Rights Consultancy and Training, an initiative which focuses on human rights education and children’s rights is launching their book “Change – Handbook for History Learning and Human Rights Education for Educators in Formal, Non-formal and Higher Education“ in context of the CHANGE project which explores and further develops the combining of history learning and human rights education.

The launch will be in cooperation with the European Wergeland Centre and the Falstad Centre where some of the editors of another new publication on the same subject work. The publication “Crossing Borders. Combining Human Rights Education and History Education“ is an anthology based on a previous conference.

Book Launches: Crossing Borders in Berlin

Awareness for change in the past

The Change Project explores and further develops the combining of history learning and human rights education. What is the relation between the two and why should we even create this combination? The project is a collaboration between the Freie Universität Berlin, Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) and right now | Human Rights Consultancy & Training. It is funded by the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future“, as part of its “Teaching Human Rights” programme. The idea was to publish the results in a handbook for educators in formal, non-formal and higher education and to collect different theoretical reflections in another anthology, and this is exactly what will happen in Berlin 29-30 September 2016. The book launches will take place during a symposium at the Freie Universität Berlin called: “Education for Change: Combining History Learning and Human Rights Education in Formal, Non-formal and Higher Education”

The idea behind the handbook is to further develop existing inspiring practices and to make them available for a wider audience, using the CHANGE concept. Core elements of history learning and human rights education as well as their interrelation will be analysed and reflected upon. Based on this analysis, suggestions for further developing the combined approach will be generated and published in the handbook for education professionals.

The publication Crossing Borders features both theoretical reflections as well as methods and practical tools for different groups of education professionals internationally. The team of editors consists of Professor Martin Lücke (lead), Dr. Felisa Tibbitts, Frank Elbers, Else Engel and Lea Fenner. EUROCLIO Founder & Special Advisor, Joke van der Leeuw-Roord, also contributed to the collection of writing under the title Including a Human Rights Focus into History Teaching – The Perspective of  EUROCLIO.

International Georg Arnhold Summer School

In July the Georg Eckert Institute and Teachers College of Columbia University are organising the third Georg Arnhold International Summer School. This year they will explore the theories and practices of human rights education (HRE) at the secondary school level. The Summer School will look back at the evolution of HRE aims and approaches as they pertain to secondary school environments, with discussions on critical approaches and pedagogies, curriculum policies, teaching and learning resources, educator preparation, non-formal programming in schools, and evidence of impact. The Summer School invites participants to “look forward” on topics such as the place of HRE within a larger critique of the human rights framework, the roles of state and non-state actors in delivering HRE, and the challenges and potentialities offered by the use of traditional and nontraditional educational media and curricula. The Georg Arnhold Program has a special interest in post-conflict and transitional societies, though proposals for other contexts will also be considered.

 

Human Rights Education Indicator Framework Launched

HRE 2020 proudly announces the release of its first publication entitled Human Rights Education Indicator Framework: Key indicators to monitor and assess the implementation of human rights education and training.

This resource provides a framework of indicators for civil society organizations, national human rights institutions and government bodies as well as United Nations mechanisms to examine the presence and quality of human rights education policies and practices. The framework aims to support a review of the status of human rights education within national planning, the formal education sector, and the training of professional groups. It is a means of understanding the scale and quality of such practices and identifying gaps and areas for improvement. Human Rights Education Indicator Framework is available here.

Call for Papers for Human Rights Education Conference in The Netherlands

Rights Education Conference on “Translating Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms to Today’s World.” will be held in Middelburg, 17-19 December, 2015. The Conference aims to support and promote the United Nations objectives in human rights education, to critically assess how human rights objectives in education are translated into practices, to highlight the role of specific actors in human rights education, and to assess the connection between Roosevelt’s four freedoms and human dignity today.

Participants are encouraged to submit their papers on the following themes: global trends in human rights education, analysing key actors in human rights education, current themes in human rights education, and the practice of human rights education.

The deadline for abstracts is September 6th, 2015 and should be sent to IHREC-2015@hrea.org.
