On 30th June, EUROCLIO Executive Director Joke van der Leeuw-Roord and Project Manager Patrick Barker participated in an event hosted by the Eduardo Frei Foundation in The Hague focusing on democratic participation in Georgia. Joke van der Leeuw-Roord presented the 3 year EUROCLIO/Matra project Tolerance Building Through History Education to an audience of 25 persons with key expertise in the Southern Caucasus based in The Netherlands. The event coincided with a study visit from the largest party in opposition in Georgia; the Christian Democratic Movement, who were visiting The Netherlands to observe the functioning of local politics in The Hague and surrounding areas. The event was a good networking opportunity, and the presentation of the project received very positive feedback from organizers and participants, who were interested in the work being conducted by EUROCLIO and the Georgian colleagues from the Georgian Association of History Educators within the project framework. Topics of discussion included the role of democratic participation in building a functioning, sustainable democratic society and the role of education in this process. Further opportunities for cooperation with the Eduardo Frei Foundation working in Georgia will be followed up accordingly by the project management team.
