European Union Support
Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission organised  on 5 October 2009 a Seminar on the Assessment of Key Competences in the framework of the Lifelong Learning: School Education Policies and Programme with specialist cluster groups on Key Competences, Teachers and Trainers, Maths, Science and Technology, and Learning Outcomes. The seminar was opened by Ms Hélène Clark, Director of the programme and chaired by Mr Adam Pokorny, Head of Unit. A variety of imputes discussed why addressing assessment is vital for the process of implementing the EU key competences for school education: communication in the mother tongue; communication in foreign languages; mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology; digital competence; learning to learn; social and civic competences; sense of initiative and entrepreneurship and cultural awareness and expression. Plus the underpinning transversal competencies critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, initiative, risk assessment, decision-taking and management of one's own feelings. Experts seem to a large extend agree that such assessment should be based on required learning outcomes.

European Union Support
Each year several thousands of schools work on common projects; teachers and pupils travel to their partner schools or take part in video conferences and chats. They create art works, videos and common publications; they exchange information on their country and learn more about the variety of Europe's culture and landscapes. Comenius Week is one occasion to present all the small and big successes in eTwinning projects and Comenius School Partnerships to the wider public. This year Comenius Week coincides with the European Year for Creativity and Innovation and many activities will focus on the creative and innovative aspects of Comenius activities. Comenius Week takes place in all 31 countries participating in the Lifelong Learning Programme. Activities are organised by the Comenius National Agencies.  See the list of the different events and activities in each country.  You can also contact your National Agency for further information.

Teaching the Whole Story?" in the European Parliament, which will be held on April 15th 2009. The event is organized by Mr. Christopher Beazley, Member of the European Parliament from UK, and aims to raise a wider debate on how the common European and World History should be taught based on the critical review written by Mr. Wojciech Roszkowski , Member of the European Parliament from Poland, on the recently published history textbook  "Histoire/Geschichte. Europa und die Welt vom Wiener Kongress bis 1945" (vol. I) and "Histoire/Geschichte. Europa und die Welt seit 1945 (vol. II)" published in Germany and France in both languages. In his review Mr. Roszkowski finds the text lacking in important areas and explains why the text is considered biased. Download the review here
