Final Management Meeting for the Bulgaria project in The Hague (26th-30th November) PDF Print E-mail
Bulgaria

Between 26th November and 30th November, the EUROCLIO secretariat hosted the final management meeting for the EUROCLIO/Matra project in Bulgaria European Dialogues, a Cultural Rainbow for the Future- An Inclusive and International Perspective on the Learning and Teaching of History in Bulgaria.. The management meeting consisted of EUROCLIO's Joke van der Leeuw-Roord, Jonathan Even-Zohar and Patrick Barker, and Bulgarian project coordinators Prof. Dr. Rumyana Kusheva and Milena Platnikova. During the meeting, a final evaluation of the project was held, with discussions on the impact of the project within the community of Bulgarian history educators, academics, politicians and the media. The Fair and Balanced History was acknowledged unanimously as a real step-forward and it is hoped that the publication will inspire the history-teaching community to take similar approaches to teaching history in an inclusive way. An assessment of the results will be compiled for the Matra final report and also written into a Special Report on the Bulgaria project(in the same style that has been done for EUROCLIO in Former Yugoslavia) in due course. There were further discussions on the possibilities for further collaboration with the Bulgarian History Teachers’ Association regarding follow-up projects and ongoing discussions on holding European training events in Bulgaria. It was concluded that when possible, EUROCLIO will continue close cooperation with the Bulgarian History teachers and we all look forward to very fruitful personal and professional working relationships.

Sofia: Active and Inspiring Teacher Training Seminars PDF Print E-mail
Bulgaria

On 31st October and 1st November two seminars were organised in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The audience consisted of a group of around 60 new teachers and the authors and editors teams. The Department of In-service Teacher-training at the St. Kliment Orhidski Building, the University of Sofia kindly hosted the event. EUROCLIO are very appreciative of the University’s warm welcome and participation in the event and would like to take this opportunity to thank the University for hosting the seminars. For many of the teachers it was their first chance to receive and explore a copy of the teaching handbook A Fair and Balanced History, 44 working sheets for active student-work with a multicultural approach. The audience expressed much vested interest in the handbook and noted the high quality of the teaching pack. They considered the topics to be new, innovative and exploratory but also remarked that they might be difficult to implement in the classroom. The overriding consensus was that the handbook was an exemplary approach to how textbooks can move away from the ideological sphere and discontinue the habit within Bulgarian history to write only about the “majority” victors’ history.

Bulgaria
On 31st October and 1st November, History Educators from Sofia, Bulgaria and its surrounding areas will convene at Department for In-service Teacher Training at the Unviersity of Sofia for workshop and training sessions on the recently Published Fair and Balanced History teaching handbook. The handbook, produced by History experts and history teachers within Bulgaria and through dialogue with International textbook experts, is part of the EUROCLIO/Matra project European Dialogue; A Cultural Rainbow for the Future. Hosted by members of the Bulgarian History Teachers Association, the teacher-training seminars combine the work of Bulgarian History Teachers’ Association, EUROCLIO and International History Education experts to continue the active-learning process and reach out to new project participants in History education in Bulgaria. The project has been conducted with financial assistance from The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Matra scheme). Workshops will focus on the exposure of the teaching handbook to history educators who have yet to sample the methodology or content of the publication, helping the project to reach out to a new audience. Workshops focusing on specific parts of the handbook and how it can be used in the classroom will be conducted with Bulgarian contributors to the publication. International presentations will include Sue Bennett (UK) an expert in History Education and former EUROCLIO President, and EUROCLIO Project Manager  Jonathan Even-Zohar (NL). The seminars promise to be a success, and are a follow-up to the official public launch of the handbook in September, and to two regional seminars held in Burgas, Bulgaria on 17th and 18th of October.
