National history canons and their role in history education is a subject of growing concern and the question whether they should or not still be the foundation of the teaching of history has raised and keeps on raising major debates. Linda Symcox from California State University and Arie Wilschut from Amsterdam University of Professional Education have edited the book entitled “National History Standards – The problem of the Canon and the Future of History”, where issues about the function of national canons and the need for today’s students and tomorrow’s citizens of the world to think in global terms, but also to act at the same time as citizens of a nation-state sharing a common past and culture, are discussed. This volume in International Review of History Education consists of a collection of interesting articles, among which you will also find the article by Joke van der Leeuw-Roord, EUROCLIO Executive Director, under the title “Yearning for Yesterday: Efforts of History Professionals in Europe at Designing Meaningful and Effective School History Curricula”.
