Korean War veteran Ahn Su-ok, 76, feels disheartened when he finds that young people have no idea about the sacrifices he and his comrades made during the 1950-53 war. He says the freedom they enjoy should not be taken for granted. With the nation commemorating the 60th anniversary of the fratricidal war Thursday, Ahn underscored that education about the war should be strengthened to remember the blood and sweat soldiers shed for the country.

Seventy years after issuing his call for France to defy the Vichy collaborationist regime, Charles de Gaulle is again dividing the French. The government of President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose political party is descended from the World War II general’s followers, has included De Gaulle’s wartime memoirs in the curriculum for next year’s high-school literary classes. Sarkozy is in London today to commemorate De Gaulle’s June 18, 1940, radio broadcast urging a defeated France not to give up.

Johannesburg – United Nations historians, education specialists and governments are now developing a common history syllabus for schools across the African continent in an effort to ensure that African youth learn about their common heritage. The new syllabus is to be based on the book entitled 'General History of Africa', an eight-volume series written from an African perspective and published by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

HISTORY teachers say terrorism, popular culture, technology and globalisation should be included in the national curriculum to make the subject more interesting and relevant to students. The History Teachers Association of Australia has criticised the proposed history subjects for years 11 and 12 as too conservative, repetitive and dated.

Changes to Texas textbooks have caused outrage across the country. On May 21, the 15-member Texas Board of Education voted 9-5 to pass new standards that apply to all civics classes. The board argued that the teachers that wrote the curriculum were too liberally biased and believe the corrections they made to include Republican political philosophies and the portrayal of conservatives in a more positive light.

Over the objections of many Russians, posters bearing Stalin’s image were approved by Moscow’s city government for display during celebrations marking Victory Day in Russia on Sunday. The issue was debated in the weeks leading up to the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, and, in the end, the anti-Stalinists won.

APRIL 1 WAS significant in the history of modern India. An act passed by parliament as early as 2002, and amended last in 2009, was finally notified by the Government of India. It is "The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009". With this notification, India joins Chile and Bangladesh to provide compulsory and free education to its children anywhere in the world.

A draft national history school curriculum may have to be pared back following complaints from teachers who say they don't have enough time to teach the subject, Australia's curriculum chief says. The authority that created the new program, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), is travelling around the country to brief teachers in each state and territory on the draft curriculum.

Historians on Tuesday criticized proposed revisions to the Texas social studies curriculum, saying that many of the changes are historically inaccurate and that they would affect textbooks and classrooms far beyond the state's borders. The changes, which were preliminarily approved last week by the Texas board of education and are expected to be given final approval in May, will reach deeply into Texas history classrooms, defining what textbooks must include and what teachers must cover.
