Macedonia: Retelling the History
 EUROCLIO is delighted to announce that the Publication developed within the Project in Macedonia “Retelling the History” ran in 2006-2007 and “Integration of Society in Estonia” 2002-2004 are now part of the “Human Rights Education in the School Systems of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice” jointly published by the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE/ODIHR), the Council of Europe, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is a great acknowledgment of the work carried out by the competent History teachers in both projects and EUROCLIO would warmly like to congratulate them.

Overall aim
To strengthen an innovative approach to history education in Macedonian society that stimulates peace, diversity and understanding

Target areas
  • To establish a cross-cultural/multiethnic working group that can identify issues for teaching which will promote education for peace, tolerance and respect for diversity
  • To promote an awareness of multi-perspectivity in history teaching: to acknowledge that national stories have many elements and that considering variety in narratives and interpretations is enriching and empowering.
  • To produce a Scheme of Work related to the twentieth century history of Macedonia, with clear knowledge, understanding, skills, concepts, attitudes and values based outcomes specified which draw on active teaching and learning styles, and which provides an innovative model for teaching history. This should represent different community perspectives and promote respect, tolerance and peaceful co-existence.
  • To create a group of ten teachers/teacher trainers who have gained from the professional development offered by this project and who consequently have enhanced capacities in implementing democratic skills and active history education.

Outcomes
  • The development of a Scheme of Work, teacher guidance, and accompanying copiable resources with innovative content and methodology and a focus on living together within a multi-ethnic community;
  • Planning and review meetings between key players and 3 active workshops,;
  • Authors and organisational meetings to discuss, develop and reflect on the resource materials;
  • Workshops and advisory work led by an international expert;
  • Sharply focused evaluation of the project and a summative report,
  • Discussion about the purpose and content of history education in schools.
