The International Society of History Didactics founded in 1980 with the initiatve of Piet Fontaine from the Netherlands, Walter Fuernrohr from Germany, and Adriano Gallia from Italy, aims to promote history education as the key to develop independent individuals capable of critical and responsible thinking. Up to 2004 the International Society for History Didactics had 275 members from 42 countries in 4 continents.

Taking place in Braunschweig (Germany), hometown of the unique Georg Eckert Institut for International Schoolbook research, the topic of this year’s Annual Conference of the International Society of History Didactics was history textbooks, methods and theories of textbook research methods. Many interesting history textbook research papers were presented from all over the world, often stressing economic, social and political dimensions of textbook styles and production methods. EUROCLIO Project Manager Jonathan Even-Zohar, but also Dr Bahri Ata (Turkey) and Tsira Chikvaidze (Georgia) represented EUROCLIO. Mr. Even-Zohar presented a paper entitled “World History in Dutch History Textbooks: Measuring Words, Reconstructing Textbooks and Future of Historical Visualization” emphasizing that textbook research should move forward to achieve deep sharing of databases, enabling broader collaborative research. |

Dr. Bahri Ata from Turkey participated in the annual conference organized by the International Society for History Didactics and Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Braunschweig on 14-16 September, 2009. In his detailed report Dr. Bahri Ata mentions the lecture by Roman Faure and Eckhardt Fuchs from the GEI about the historical roots of the international revision of history textbooks, began at the end of the First World War as well as Henrik Aström Elmersjö from Sweden, who explained the revision of Scandinavian History textbooks after 1945. |
