On 21-22 June, the European Commission DG Communication hosted the 2nd Structured Dialogue Meeting on the “Europe for Citizens” Programme in Brussels. Over 100 representatives of ministries, ngo’s and other civil society organisations from all over Europe and beyond met and exchanged with EC Policy Makers their views on the current and future “Europe for Citizens” Citizenship funding programme. As part of an invitation extended by EUCIS-LLL, EUROCLIO was actively represented by Jonathan Even-Zohar at this meeting. In the many break-out sessions and participatory Open Space and World Café discussions that were organized by the Commission, he represented the view that History Education can be a fundamental instrument in achieving the programmes aims. The next generation “Europe for Citizens” Programme will be launched in 2014, which made this approach of the commission to consult the stakeholders and civil society representatives in this early stage unique, relevant and useful. The European Commission – Education and Training Conference on “Improving Education” held in Stockholm from 30 November - 1 December 2009, brought together researchers and policy makers in the education field to present key results from secondary analysis of international studies that are relevant for education policy making. Through various lectures that formed part of the event, the conference proved to be relevant not only for policy makers but also for teachers as it show-cased the evolving nature of education and its importance for social transformation, as well as the fact that the capacity of teachers need to be constantly improved and updated for effectiveness. In particular, the following sessions deserve the attention of history teachers: “School and education system effects on student achievements” - highlighted some transitions in systems and methods of education from the traditional to modern. “The impact of teachers and teaching on students’ achievements” – showed the essence of teachers’ professional development for educational outcomes.
