On Tuesday 24th December 2009, EUROCLIO-HIP Bosnia-Herzegovina president and project coordinator for the award-winning EUROCLIO project History in Action Edin Radusic was interviewed on Radio France for a program focusing on Balkan history. While the debate over the teaching of history has recently been reignited in France, the program focused on a very different from the French tradition. Where French centralism has since the nineteenth century imposed a curriculum fairly centralized, Bosnia-Herzegovina now has become a country where the learning of history in the classroom is divided. There were various topics of discussion, ranging from the fact there are fourteen ministers of education who decide independently what to teach in differing cantons of the country. The discussion then turned to how much the weight the recent conflict hangs over the teaching of history. Issues such as these were discussed in the company of Srdjan Dizdarevic, president of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights. The program was yet more recognition of the challenges that remain in the Western Balkans in history teaching, but also recognition of those who are willing to overcome these challenges.
