Human Right Education: Lessons from History

This year’s EUROCLIO Annual Professional Development Conference was held in Bled, hosted by the Slovenian History Teachers’ Association from 19-25 march, 2007. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Human Rights Education: Lessons from History’. More than 125 participants from European countries, The United States, and Canada gathered to discuss on the topic of Human Rights education. The main question that was discussed at the conference was: How can education contribute to the development of democratic citizenship and participation, which promotes social cohesion, international understanding and respect for diversity and human rights?
The Slovenian History Teacher’s Association succeeded in organizing a very successful programme around this topic, with lectures by professors, speeches by professionals in the field, workshops with the aim to develop practical teaching skills, visits to local schools and visits to several historical places around Bled. The participants were very active in the discussion groups and a lot of history teachers concluded in the evaluation that they learned new methods and met with new ideas applicable to their lessons. Lectures and workshops offering practical methods and hints were appreciated a lot. The most important aspect if the conference was the opportunity to meet colleagues from all over Europe and discuss with them on topics of shared interest. The participants were very interested in comparing different views on history teaching.
Overall the conference was very successful and participants were grateful to the organization and said they learned a lot!
