Using History Skills and Concepts to Promote an Awareness of European Citizenship.This years’ EUROCLIO Annual Conference and Professional Training and Development Course was held in Malta from 20-26 March 2006. It was very successfully organized by the History Teachers’ Association of Malta, I-Ghaqda ta´l-Ghalliema ta´l-Istorja . The topic of discussion was ‘Using History Skills and Concepts to Promote an Awareness of European Citizenship’. In total 140 people from 36 countries traveled to Malta to participate, mostly from European countries, as well as from the U.S.A.
The conference was preceded by the Euroclio annual board meeting and a study visit to the historical city of Valletta. The official opening was among others by the President of Malta H.E.Dr Edward Fenech Adami K.U.O.M.,B.A., LL.D, the minister of education of Malta and the Euroclio president. The programme included lectures, workshops and discussion groups, to promote active participation and the development and improvement of teaching skills. The participants also had the opportunity to visit local schools and explore the beautiful historical places of Malta. The organizational skills, hospitality and the warmth expressed by the Maltese colleagues were widely appreciated by the participants. Conference evaluations show a very enthusiastic reaction to meeting people from different countries, sharing thoughts and problematising issues in history education, establishing new contacts and building new relations as well as maintaining and renewing existing ones.
