Gaining Equilibrium? Building from the Local to the Global Perspective.

The EUROCLIO Annual Training Conference took place on 11-17 April 2005 in Riga, Latvia. This year’s conference theme was ‘Gaining Equilibrium? Building from the Local to the Global Perspective’ A joint debate focused on matters which are vital to educators across Europe and beyond, and which demand urgent practical responses: how to balance and connect the local, national, regional, European and world dimension; and how to diminish dimensional stereotypes in history education?
The organization was in the hands of the Association of History Teachers in Latvia, Latvijas Vestures Skolotaju Asociacija and the University of Latvia in Riga, who did an excellent job. 143 participants from 43 different countries participated. They came from almost all European countries, but also Australia, South-Africa and the United States of America were represented. The inspiring words of the State President of Latvia, Ms Vaira Vike-Freiberga were one of the highlights of the conference, together with the lecture of Mr Ojars Kalnins, Director of the Latvian Institute. The programme was varied with museum visits, school visits and active workshops as well as lectures and study visits. The evaluation of the conference showed an overwhelming appreciation for the opportunity the conference offered to meet and talk about important issues in European history education, to build new relations and contacts and strengthen existing ones. We are happy that so many people were eager to participate in this conference. Riga 2005 was a new highlight in the history of EUROCLIO!
