Aims and objectives
- To develop innovative history education in the project countries through guidance on ways of learning and teaching a topic which fosters a multilateral approach. The approaches blend traditional methods of conveying knowledge about the past with new approaches to history teaching which are designed to promote democratic values, critical thinking skills and independent learners.
- To share information on the educational systems of Albania, Bulgaria and Macedonia and build on each other experiences.
- To share good practice in history teaching and to co-operate and exchange ideas with an open mind.
- To support the love of learning history through multicultural and multiperspective approaches.
- To produce materials which enable teachers to promote democratic practices, human rights, the rule of law and peace.
- To promote intercultural education which aims at a mutual understanding between pupils with different backgrounds. It should shape the pupils’ awareness of similarities and differences and combat nationalism, discrimination and racism.
- To research possibilities for wider implementation of information and communication technology in the project countries.
- To select appropriate aims and objectives from the national standards so that they become achievable within the constraints of the hours available for teaching, and in respect of class size, age and ability.
- To develop a range of assessment techniques which aim to improve the objectives of innovative teaching.
- To establish a national network for the learning and teaching of history in Albania, Bulgaria and Macedonia and strengthen the Associations of History Educators
- To establish a regional network for the learning and teaching of history through the structure of the project and by inviting observers from neighbouring countries.
Outcomes
- National History Teachers Associations as national core-groups of history educators matured in the democratic process and with respect and tolerance for other people and societies in the region. The Associations act as multiplying agents of change in the further development of history curricula, textbooks, assessment strategies and teacher training in their country.
- A network of teacher training institutes which foster innovative approaches to the learning and teaching.
- A wider group of innovative teachers and schools, familiar with a multiperspective approach in the learning and teaching of history and willing to apply the new approaches in their classroom.
- A large group of pupils with a new understanding of the past which offers perspectives of peace for the future.
- A regional network for the learning and teaching of history within an international context such as EUROCLIO.
