European Citizenship
EUROCLIO is constantly seeking to create synergies with other organisations working in the field of active European citizenship and citizenship education. Indeed, as stated in the Association’s Policy Paper 2020, “EUROCLIO believes that innovative history, heritage and citizenship education focusing on an understanding of social cohesion, democracy and human rights and responsibilities are fundamental for a vibrant future political system”. EUROCLIO maintains on-going relations with its partners through exchange of information, invitation to events, and joint implementation of projects.

Between 5-7 June, EUROCLIO Project Manager Patrick Barker represented the EUROCLIO association at the European Civil Meeting 2011, hosted by the Hungarian presidency of the EU. The event brought together over 400 participants from policy-makers to practitioners, in the field of European citizenship and education, to create collaborative recommendations to the European Institutions on common themes. EUROCLIO participated in the Civil Meeting’s workshop on EU Citizenship Education and Active Youth, pressing for a strong recognition of the role of teachers and greater professional development opportunities for educators on a transnational level. Tangible outcomes of interest to EUROCLIO’s members and daily practice from the recommendations included an increase in funding on a European level for adult education and lifelong learning, and the suggestion to create a ‘Visegrad-style’ cooperation for the countries of the Western Balkans to increase regional cooperation.
