About the Organisation

Founded in 1869, the Norwegian Historical Association is today an organisation with extensive and varied tasks serving the historical discipline and promoting the interests of historians in Norway. It aims to promote historical research, develop the teaching of history at all levels and strengthen the position of the discipline in the public eye. Local branches have been set up in Tromsø, Bodø, Nord-Trøndelag, Sør-Trøndelag, Nordvestlandet, Sogn og Fjordane, Bergen, Rogaland, Agder, Vestfold and Østlandet (Oslo). The association accepts as members history graduates and teachers who hold a historical degree on university level. Others can be accepted as members after an evaluation by the board.

Every three years history teachers from the Nordic countries meet for a few days to share ideas and experience – and to enjoy each other’s company in general. This year the meeting took place in Lyngseidet in Northern-Norway on 3-5 August. The topic of the seminar was national identities, the image the nations in the North keep of themselves and each other and how this is reflected in history teaching. The Norwegian hosts made sure that this was properly covered while simultaneously taking care that participants were able enjoy the beautiful nature of this very special area where Norwegians, Finns and Sami people have lived together for centuries.
