During the 10th Michael A Sant Memorial Lecture, held last October, the Maltese HTA published the second volume of a collection of papers presented during the past lectures. The first paper by Terry Haydn focuses on the pupils’ ideas about why they do history and why these ideas matter. Christine Counsell then, discusses central concepts in the teaching of history and how these can be delivered in the classroom. Ian Phillips focuses on diversity, war, religion, and multiculturalism and explains how teachers need to help their students focus on the realities of the past. In his paper Robert Stradling examines the importance of providing different historical perspectives in the classroom. Finally George Cassar and Yosanne Vella discuss history teaching in Malta in the last one hundred years in Malta. For more information contact Dr George Cassar emailing him on

Napoleons reforms in Malta abolished slavery, decreased the power of the catholic church, increased interest rates for borrowing money, set up schools and left the population with the debts of the Order. In the new school Maltese history textbook, students are requested to assess these reforms, and to judge whether they were positive or negative for the Maltese society. It is clear that it is not possible to formulate just one clear answer on several of these measures, as the judgment will depend on ones outlook in life or changing circumstances. A team of history educators, members of the Maltese History Teachers’ Association, published under the title “From the Coming of the Knights to EU Membership” the first school textbook on Maltese History. This book offers multiperpectivity and diversity through a rich variety of texts, visual and written source materials and a wealth of tasks and questions. It supports students to understand the world around them. With chapters as Malta under the rule of the Order, the British take over, The Maltese political leaders, remembering the victims of World War I and Malta and the EU, the book offers a manifold of answers to present day students about the past of their country. The complexity and multiperspectivity of this Maltese past is highlighted through discussions about drawbacks and benefits for the island of World War I, the language question, or the questions of democratization and independence. The book also favors an open approach to the history of Malta, demonstrating its relations to the rest of Europe, using international sources and showing the variety of languages used in Malta. For the last twenty years Dr. Yosanne Vella has been researching history pedagogy in the local and foreign scene investigating the teaching of history in both primary and secondary levels. She has presented her work at various local and international conferences as well in academic journals abroad. Dr Vella has now felt the need to collect these papers in one book making them easily accessible for local history teacher practitioners, student teachers and researchers involved in history teaching. The book looks into the philosophy behind effective history teaching, learning theories and children’s understanding in history and the theories influencing history teaching outside the classroom. In Search of Meaningful History Teaching-A collection of research work on the teaching of History is another book published by the History Teachers’ Association.
