About the Organisation

The History Teachers' Association of Latvia is a non-governmental, voluntary organisation of professionals; it consists of history teachers of different nationalities, both from schools with Latvian language of instruction and various ethnic minorities' schools.
The LVSA was founded in 1992 by 13 members, thus it will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2002. During this decade the number of members grew to 246. In March 1995 the Association officially became member of EUROCLIO. The LVSA with its central board in Riga, connects a number of project groups and working groups throughout the country that organise in-service training and seminars. The LVSA aims at bringing together creative people; promoting the development of history teaching in schools; facilitating the development and approbation of new curricula and textbooks for history teaching; contributing to history teachers' professional development and co-operating in international networks

The history Teachers Association of Latvia is organising the annual "Summer Days" - courses for its members already for 14th time. This year more than 100 history teachers will meet in July 26-28  2011 in Aizkraukle- town which is lokated on river Daugava and has rich and interesting historical heritage. All the participants will act like experts testing a new History teachers’ professional development programme as well as sharing experience about practical classroom teaching. One day will be devoted to the studies of the historical sites in surroundings of Aizkraukle.

From October 21st-23rd 2010, VGD, the German Association of History Teachers in cooperation with Goethe Institute Riga and the Latvian History Teachers´ Association launched another cross-border conference addressing the topical aspect “A European culture of remembrance?” Presentations from both countries´ perspectives, as well as a number of workshops concentrated on the question which elements might present themselves as modules of a widely accepted European culture of remembrance. VGD´s five representatives aimed at looking into elements complementing the Holocaust, a topic that must be regarded as our painful legacy. They have put the aspects of the Enlightenment, migration, belief in progress, Christian Western civilization (thus including Russia more pronouncedly) and Industrialization forward for discussion – aspects that might be seen as hopefully more constructive for our societies. EUROCLIO is delighted to see the joint activities of its Member Associations and would very much hope for a continuation of this fruitful and lively discussion in such welcoming surroundings. Dzintra Liepina, active Member of the Latvian HTA, has written a detailed report on the recent developments in the field of History Education in Latvia. During the last 3 years teaching of separate subjects „World history” and „History of Latvia” was tested in 43 schools in Latvia. There was no clear methodology how to assess the results of this experiment, however the Latvian Ministry of Education, History of Latvia and World History will be two seperate subjects for pupils in grades 6 to 9 (12-15 years old).

13th Summer days of HTA of Latvia with more than 100 participants took place in a small town Limbazi in North-Eastern part of Latvia in July 27-29. The theme of meeting was “History and Environment” and lectures and study visits were mostly focused on cultural and historical heritage and interesting environmental objects in Limbazi and Salacgriva areas. As always- hot discussions about actualities in history teaching and workshops were important part of courses. Summer days were supported by the local authorities, museums and schools. More active contact and exchange of information between HTA of Latvia and Estonia was re-established and two participants from Estonia took part in history teachers’ meeting in Latvia, but in August two Latvian participants went to Summer days in Estonia.

One of the nice traditions of the History Teachers Association Latvia is the organising of summer courses- the so called “Summer Days” for history educators. This year on July 28th-30th 2009 the “Summer Days” will take place in Kuldiga- a small and nice town in Courland (the western part of Latvia), which in the past used to be a capital of the Courland dukedom. The meeting  is supported by Kuldiga administrative and educational authorities and an interesting programme has been prepared  by the local history teachers organisation. The first day is mainly devoted to the history and cultural heritage of Kuldiga and the region, while the second will include practical workshops, presentations and discussions on actual history teaching problems in Latvia. Using the EUROCLIO network Madona Mikeladze has been invited to the “Summer Days” to represent the Georgian HTA and share the experience on history teaching in Georgia and history of Georgia. Both Associations hope to develop their cooperation also in future. For more information, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
