altOn the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the longstanding member of EUROCLIO, LANDIS (Laboratori Nazionale per la Didattica della Storia), in cooperation with Isrebo, Cedost and IRIS, organized a two-day seminar with international lectures and workshops entitled “A reflection about citizenship and democracy; a knotty problem of the seventies. Italy in the International context”.

Over 50 history and citizenship educators listened to historical presentations about the construction of national identity and memory and legacy of the violence in the seventies. Moreover, a comparative approach was used to study the cases of transition to fuller democracy between Greece, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Chile. Also, a session was organized with EUROCLIO about teaching sensitive and controversial issues, including presentations by the experts Andrea Hajek, Chris Rowe and Mire Mladenovski. Finally, a 2,5 hours workshop entitled “Multiperspectivity with a palette of sources; examples of innovative teaching of sensitive history” was organized by Jonathan Even-Zohar and Mire Mladenovski. The conference in total provided a very interesting platform for discussion on an issue that is, according to some “not yet historical”.

On September 29-30 2011 the Italian History Teachers Association LANDIS will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy’s Unification with an International Conference entitled “A Reflection about Citizenship and Democracy: a Knotty Problem of the Seventies. Italy in the International Context”. The Conference is organized in cooperation with EUROCLIO, Istituto Parri Emilia-Romagna, Isrebo (Istituto per la Storia della Resistenza e della Società Contemporanea nella Provincia di Bologna Luciano Bergonzini), Cedost (Centro di Documentazione Storico-Politica sullo Stragismo), and with the patronage of Regione Emilia-Romagna, Provincia di Bologna and Ufficio Scolastico Regionale Emilia-Romagna. EUROCLIO Senior Manager Jonathan Even-Zohar will participate at the Round Table “How do history teachers tackle complex and controversial knots of the recent past, today in Europe? Which thematizations, which problematizations, which periodizations?” and together with Mire Mladenovski, President of History Teachers Association of Macedonia (HTAM), an exemplary workshop from the earlier innovative publication “Ordinary People in an Extraordinary Country. Yugoslavia between East and West. 1945-1990” will be held. A manifold of other themes will be discussed in round table sessions and workshops, including various international reflections on the history of the seventies, including Greece, Spain, Argentina, Chile and Portugal.

The Italian association LANDIS, National Laboratory for History Teaching (Laboratorio Nazionale per la Didattica della Storia), in cooperation with EUROCLIO, is organizing a three day conference about the Seventies, involving both historic and education experts. This conference entitled “A Reflection about Citizenship and Democracy: a Knotty Problem of the Seventies. Italy in the International Context” (Una riflessione su cittadinanza e democrazia: il nodo degli anni Settanta. L’Italia nel contesto internazionale), will take place in Bologna, Italy on Septermber 29-October 1 2011. The Seventies, for Italy but not only here, represent a controversial historic moment, of which a shared memory does not yet exist. We can maybe find some bad memories as potential sources of conflicts. Here is why is very important to think about this period, with particular reference to democracy and citizenship evolution. On the historical level, the conference will focus on the Seventies starting from Italy in an international context. On the educational level, it will focus on teaching sensitive and controversial issues in history. Teachers, to whom this conference is particularly dedicated, will be very interested to understand the methodology necessary to deal with these topics. Starting from the suggestions of the experts that will be offered in workshops, teachers will have the possibility to think, now and in the future, about these important topics.
