History

The German Association of History Teachers, was founded in Marburg in 1913 and refounded in Munich in 1949. At the moment the Association has 3400 members who are spread over 16 subassociations in the single federal states and act autonomously, while the main body of the federal association has coordinating, initiating and stimulating functions.

Aims
The Association’s aims are focused on the support of History’s system, guaranteeing the scientific character of teachers´ training in Germany. The Association also works to take up debates in the field of historical-political education in order to contribute to the content-aspects of modernizing the subject of History.

Activities
The association`s activities comprise the publishing of the professional journal “History for Today. The Journal for historical-political education” (published by Wochenschau), the co-organization of the German Historians´ Symposium, international relations, as well as the organization of advanced training courses and the classical task of representing the interests of their subject and its teachers. A series of workshops have been founded since 2002 and funded by different foundations and institutions in order to serve VGD’s goal to contribute to the content-aspects of modernizing the History.

altA very special museum is being constructed near Göttingen (Lower Saxony) at the moment: The former transit camp for 4 million refugees, repatriates from the former GDR and ethnic German immigrants from Russia into the Federal Republic since 1945 is now, as it has not been used anymore, being turned into a memorial site and a museum. Its focus is not only put on the aspect of remembrance but also on the phenomenon of integration - in order to show different types of integration but also problems that accompanied attempts to integrate immigrants. As this issue has not only been of historical interest but is also a topical point with political implications, history and civics educators at schools are one of the main target groups of this unique site. The German Association of History Teachers is supporting the didactical shaping of the museum, promoting modern history education.

Georg-Eckert-Institute for International Textbook Research has just finished a project analyzing the concepts of Europe presented in French and German textbooks from 1900 until today. Connected to this, possibilities for the funding of related transfer-projects by the German Research Foundation are given. DFG (German Research Foundation) in cooperation with VGD, German History Teachers´ Association and ZDF (public German TV station) are now going to transfer the results of that project to history lessons at schools by turning scientific findings into concrete lesson plans. An accompanying publication will cover more general aspects of historical consciousness, as well as the concepts of Europe of other European countries – starting with the French-German perspective – aiming at a better understanding between nations.

For seven years now,  the German branch of the American HISTORY CHANNEL has run a film competition for schools, which is gaining more and more importance in this country, particularly since it is the one competition featuring only films in Germany. This year`s motto  Beyond Borders had inspired quite a number of school classes across Germany  to hand in exceptional contributions. The jury, including representatives of the German state broadcasting station ZDF, the magazines FOCUS and P.M. History, the Institute of Contemporary History and the German History Teachers´ Association, awarded the best entries in Munich this May. The ceremony was chaired by Dr. Auma Obama, patroness of the competition and sister of the US President. Obama, having spent 16 years of her life in Germany, not only gave a vivid impression of that time but also found critical words about growing difficulties to overcome borders in many parts of the world.

VGD, the German Association of History Educators, is at the moment cooperating with the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, on the exhibition “The Salian Dynasty: Power in Transition”. The exhibition promises to be the highpoint of the “Year of the Salians-2011”. Unique precious items, treasures of book and ivory artistry, as well as archaeological finds will bring the 11th and start of the 12th centuries in its many facets to life in Speyer from April 10 until October 30, 2011.
