About the Organisation

The Georgian Association of History Educators is an independent nongovernmental professional organization. It was establish ed in 1997 by the small group of historians, especially authors of history textbooks, and history teachers. Later, in 1998 professors of two main Georgian universities and most active history teachers of Tbilisi Public schools joined it. From the same year GAHE became the member of EUROCLIO and board members participate in its annual conferences and professional training development courses. Since 2008 the GAHE has branches in Gori and Batumi regions, and in perspective there will be in all 12 regions of Georgia.

The sphere of activities of the Georgian Association of History Educators includes the arrangement of professional conferences on issues related to history teaching, the organization of workshops, the roundtables and professional training and development courses. The GAHE coordinates history educators’ activities not only in Tbilisi universities, schools and scientific centers, but also all around Georgia, and cooperates with similar organizations and scholars working in this field in other countries. The Association uses various means of mass media, in order to advertise its activities and disseminate professional information about different aspects of history education not only among professionals, but to a wide public

On the 15th of June 2011 the Centre for Methodological Training in History Education was opened at the Shota Rustaveli Batumi State University in Georgia. The Centre will serve as the first of its kind in the Ajara region. The opening of the Centre is the result of cooperation between the Georgian Association of History Educators (GAHE), Batumi State University, and Bulgarian History Teachers Association (BGHTA). The initiative is supported by the EUROCLIO – European Association of History Educators within the framework of the EUROCLIO/Matra project ‘Tolerance Building through History Education’ in Georgia.

Thanks to the support of the EUROCLIO/MATRA project ‘Tolerance Building through History Education in Georgia’, GAHE (the Georgian Association of History Educators) started in October 2010 to rent an office space where the Association Board and small groups of members can gather. As one can see on the pictures, the newly acquired place is already intensely used: amongst other activities, regular meetings of the Project Editorial Board and training sessions for the piloting of the teaching materials are organised there. The office has been furnished thanks to a donation from the European Commission Delegation in Georgia; the shelves are not yet fully filled, but hard work is definitely happening already as the pictures show ... We wish the Association a lot of inspiring and fruitful meetings to be held in the new office, and hope this dedicated space will help working on the organisation’s sustainability for the coming years.

IJSU On the 5th of July at Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi, the Georgian Association of History Educators in conjunction with EUROCLIO hosted its first annual meeting with over 150 participants from all regions of Georgia. ‘The event was a huge success, with trainings from local and international experts, democratic elections for a new president of GAHE, Regional branch activity presentations from most regions of Georgia and the ratification of new statutes to ensure sustainability and democratic procedures are at the core of the association’s legal documents. Patrick Barker, EUROCLIO project manager presented the work of EUROCLIO as an active transnational civil society organization, and its growth since 1993 as an example of civil participation in European history education. Thomas Sherlock (Professor of Political Science at the West Point Military Academy, USA) presented a thought-provoking insight into historical memory from the perspective of countries dealing with difficult pasts; tailored to the current situation in Georgia and the recent events and debates in the media regarding the removal of the Stalin statue in Gori.A Full report is available here
