On the 16th of November, the EUROCLIO/Matra project in Bulgaria between 2006-2009 was invited to participate in an event hosted by The Netherlands Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria to officially call an end to the Matra program for Bulgaria. The project European Dialogues ran for three years with the support of Matra. Participating in the event on behalf of the project and the Bulgarian History Teachers’ Association was Bistra Stoimenova, Assistant in Methodology of teaching History at the Department of in-service teacher-training at the University of Sofia. The event gave a good insight into the wide-ranging initiatives supported by Matra through the years. The event was a reminder of the capability of civil society cooperation with governments to achieve goals and address the collective challenges facing societies. In the case of the EUROCLIO/Matra project in Bulgaria, with the material developed within the project being used across the country and still used for training of teachers through the Bulgarian History Teachers’ Association. The book “die Heimat trägt man im Herzen”  (The homeland is where ones heart is) is a collaborative project, written between  high school  students from Germany and  Bulgaria.  It outlines diverse ways and waves of enforced migration during the Second World War based on perspectives and memories of migrants. The book is written in German and Bulgarian simultaneously which makes it possible to use it in both countries.

It is divided into three parts which focus on the following countries. 1.  East Prussia and Silsia 2.  Sudeten Germany and 3. Bulgaria. Every part consists of similar elements, referring to traditional recipes, poetry, and songs. This in addition to interviews with contemporary witnesses and news paper articles gives the book a very personalized and easy accessible character.
