EUROCLIO, the European Association of History Educators

EUROCLIO, the European Association of History Educators, promotes a responsible and innovative teaching of history based on multi-perspectivity, critical thinking, mutual respect, and the inclusion of controversial issues. The Association advocates a sound use of history education towards the building and deepening of democratic societies, connecting professionals across boundaries of countries, ethnicities and religions. It seeks to enhance the quality of history and citizenship education through capacity building for educators and producing innovative teaching tools. EUROCLIO has been able to define and pragmatically refine a methodology building on the practical work it carried out. Its approach is process-orientation centred and believes in reinforcing professional talents as fundamental resources for innovation and change. In 2011, EUROCLIO represents 77 independent and volunteer History heritage and citizenship Educators’ Associations and related Institutes from 49 mostly European countries and reaches out to a network of at least 25.000 history, heritage and citizenship educators.

Supporting history education

EUROCLIO views history as the most important school subject for the political and civic development of young people. It is the most structured channel for developing historical awareness of societies, thus contributing to societal advancement in a constructive manner.EUROCLIO seeks to enhance the quality of history and citizenship education through the transfer of sound academic historical knowledge, educational theory and methodological discourse to the school and training institute levels, history and citizenship curricula and textbook and assessment development.

Stimulating intercultural dialogue

By fighting the instrumentalisation of history education for petty political objectives, EUROCLIO work fosters mutual understanding among Europe’s citizens, and boosts cultural and linguistic diversity. Supporting responsible history, heritage and citizenship education challenges stereotypes about the ‘other’ communities, showing shared experiences and addressing topics such as migration. EUROCLIO trains professionals in developing and implementing inclusive teaching tools and resources respecting ethnic, linguistic, religious, gender and social diversity, suitable for increasingly diverse European societies.

Promoting lifelong learning

Teaching responsible and innovative history at school in the 21st century demands well-rounded professionals. The capacity building of history educators is at the core of EUROCLIO’s mission. The Association organises national and international pre-service and in-service training based on cross border sharing of good practice, expertise transfer and peer learning. Throughout the years EUROCLIO seminars and workshops have been gathering thousands of history educators from all over Europe and beyond.

Empowering professional networks

Many history professionals in Europe have set up over the last 20 years independent national History and Citizenship Educators Associations, with a lot of them supported in this endeavour by EUROCLIO. These local Associations develop ownership within history and citizenship education based on inter-ethnic collaboration, good governance practices and shared responsibility. EUROCLIO encourages its member Associations and the individuals who run them to raise the professional profile of history educators among other stakeholders in history education.
